My 2011 F350 doesn't engage from the electric switch on the dash. The manual hub locks engage the 4 w.drive however. When I turn the switch in the dash it says it is engaging, but it isn't. This would seem to indicate that there is a problem in the transfer case. I know very little about 4 w.d. operation but am otherwise mechanically knowledgeable. Help please.
Make sure you're on gravel, dirt or sand. Stop the truck completely (I realize the manual says you can shift up to 62 MPH if I remember correctly), shift to 4H while still in drive. Finagle the steering wheel left and right, try reversing and fordward as well just barely inching along. Sometimes the actuators don't like to work if the 4WD hasn't been used enough. In the manual I believe it says to excersize the 4WD system by driving in 4WD 10 miles a month or so. Good luck.
You are in the 2017 forum, would probably get some better help in the 1999-2016 section. Although I don't know if theres really that much difference in the 4x4 system, there probably more people there that have run into your issue.
If it's showing that it's going into 4Hi or 4Lo go turn your hubs to LOCK. This means the transfer case is engaging and not the hubs. If it goes into 4x4 you have a vacume problem going to the hubs. The AUTO hubs are vacume actuated and have a manual(lock) over ride you can use until you get it fixed. I think that's your problem as it happens
This is exactly why I like the manual lever rather than the electronic shift on the fly. It could also be something electrical in the switch as well. Do post when you get to the root of the problem as I have thought about this situation when you may need 4x4 out in the sticks in the middle of winter and your dash switch does not work.

I also wanted the manual lever but couldn't have it with the center console. I guess I am a vain kinda guy or an idiot!
Also, manual lever is not available on the higher trims.
I found out a long time ago there is a lot of interchangeable parts on these super duty’s. If your particular truck doesn’t have a factory mod you want, add it. Such as: later model headlights, towing mirrors, manual trans or T-case floor shifter. All it takes is a little ingenuity, parts, some investigation and elbow grease!
