My 2002 X is not shifting into 4wheel.... the dash display is illuminating 4x4 and 4 wheel low but the front wheels do not move... I tried to move the hubs into the manual full lock setting, but they don't move... Anyone have any sugestions?
I don't know much about the 4-wheel drive system on the X/SD, but I can bet that the hubs just need to be taken apart, cleaned, and lubed. If they still don't move after that, you may have a serious problem. Once you do get them working again, I recommend using 4wd high if you ever get hit with some rain. My neighbor does that with his '00 and now '04 Superduty and the hubs rarely ever locked up on him. Best-o-luck to ya'
This is a pretty common problem for folks that do not use 4x4 very often. In all likelyhood, your hubs are either dirty or have a vacuum leak. Basically, the switch on the dash does two things.... first is engage an electric motor that puts the transfer case into 4-wheel drive... and second causes a vaccum to the hubs to engage them. If they are dirty, the hubs won't engage. One thing that some folks have done is to spray a can of WD-40 into each hub to wash out some of the dirt. Try that first, alternating WD-40 and turning from auto-to-manual-to-auto. It may allow you to rotate the manual **** on the hub.
If that frees them up but they still won't engage from the dash switch, then check the vaccum lines to the hubs. The line enters behind the wheel near the top by the brake caliper . The line runs to a switch under the hood just behind the battery on the passenger side. If none of this helps, then I hope you have warranty. Also, go over the Superduty forum, there is a lot of discussion of this problem.
I just realized that my hubs also are not switching to 4wd. Would have liked to find that out before my church saw me get stuck in a huge pile of snow at the curb!!! Also before I took a turn too fast off the freeway and tickled a pole!!! All THIS weekend!!! I thought it was shifting into 4wd when the light came on. At the repair shop, I tried to turn the manual lock and nothing happened. I will try the wd-40 tonight and hopefully it will work.
I went crazy trying to fix the problem with no luck, its out of warranty and ford wants $225 per wheel parts and 2 hours labor...My mechanic said to get a set of warn premium hubs and plug the vaccum line, total cost $240... I wont have the auto lock feature but, I'm sure i'll have superior quaility, and a big $ savings...
I agree with your mechanic. If you can't free them up with WD-40 and checking the vacuum lines, then I would replace the stock units with Warn. If you have access to a heated garage you can pull the wheels and pop the covers off the hubs to clean them up.
This time of year I am running with my hubs in manual anyway. Costs me a little in mileage and wear, but I never have to worry about being in 4x4 when I need it. We were lucky, we only got a foot out of yesterdays storm. My youngest daughter got 30" of snow in Mass.
