I replaced the shift fork pads hoping that would address this. No bueno.
My shifter still vibrates/rattles at highway speeds. It's loud and obnoxious.
The transmission shifts smoothly, and there doesn't appear to be any excessive play in anything. Any other ideas for cause/fix? Hoping to not have to tear into the trans. Doing the shift fork pads is about the extent of my capability right now.
I've known about this problemo since the early 1960's, been typing the info on FTE since day one, as this was the first part number I listed.
An FTE members truck had broken down on a NorCal freeway near Vallejo, his NP435 shift lever had popped out of the tower.
I told him what the problem was, found one a these caps at a local dealer. He bought it, then the dealer delivered it to him.
He installed it and away he went, happy as a clam.
Searching for it now. It's an obsolete part, and the places I'm finding that do list it show it's for HD trucks from the 60s, but I assume it would fit any NP435?

B8T-7220-D (replaced B8T-7220-A) = Same: NP435 4 speed and NP541 & NP542 5 speeds (that you won't find in an F100/350) / Obsolete ~ 80+ available NOS
Carpenter has the largest quantity, most of the other sources only have one or two.
CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 35 = 800-476-9653.
At one time, NAPA and indie auto parts stores also had this puppy.

MCDONALD OBSOLETE PARTS in Rockport IN has 4 = 812-359-4965.
No one else has this original part number, because it was replaced in 1988.
1988: FoMoCo changed the package quantity of a gazillion parts.
When theIDIOTS did this, they changed the part numbers suffixes, rendering all the previous part numbers obsolete.
On a related note, what originally went above this cap to keep water out of trans? I made my own cover, but figure there had to be something there before
