On one of my old 4 speeds there were some nylon pieces that went on the shift forks inside that keep the slop out of the shifter. Mine were worn and needed replaced. That took the slop out of it. I believe it was an NP435 but can't remember 100%
what year is the trany, there a different ends on the stick for different years. it seems the old it is the more ridgid it is. 86 shifter has a seperate end with a pin holding it on = alot of slop 78 stick one piece = ridgid
Older 435's like late 60's had solid shift lever, later had the small ball (shifter gate end) floating on O rings for less cab noise but rubbery shifting. If you have the newer O ring, epoxy it solid. As stated before check those nylon pads in the shifter fork, if worn or missing you'll have a crappy 3rd and 4th shifting. Make sure the ring that the nylon rides on is polished smooth.
The side pins are crap even when new in the shifter top cover, I tapped and installed stepped allens with lock nuts. Also when setting synchro end clearance go .010" less than the factory minimum clearance, this will allow sooner synchro action (cone into drum) before dog engagement. Make sure the input end clearance is set before the above synchro check. Wrap the cover plate and shifter to prevent grit wearing away the shifter top, you should have a clean quick, yes you can speed shift a 435 and yes they can break. Replace that 7 ball #308 bearing with a 11 ball will make it live longer. Done rambling.
