I am not wanting to disagree with Mark K., but are you sure it isn't the torque converter unlocking instead of downshifting? Was you using the cruise control any?

Kevin
Never used the cruise control. Tried it once and the engine downshifted right away so I turned it off and never tried it again. Figured it was just too much work for the system with the cruise on.

The cruise on my PSD's will work faster then my right foot with 17K behind me. I enjoy just sitting there watching it perform. Waste of diesel but I like it a lot!
Can anyone tell me what this MLPS actually does and what kind of issues it will give if it is going bad?
The MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor) tells the computer where the shift lever is located, i.e., park, reverse, neutral, drive, 2, or 1.
If it is going bad sometimes the trans can hang in a lower gear, or even downshift at higher speeds. If it downshifts at highway speeds a one way clutch overruns, so it seems that the trans has shifted to neutral.
Replace the Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS.) In these years there was a problem where they would start to fail and indicate that you moved the shifter to the 2 position. That causes a downshift.
You can diagnose this if you can watch a live data stream. Watch the PRNDL data to see if it moves from drive when you have a downshift. It may only indicate it for a second or two, but that is enough to make a downshift happen.
Hey Mark I was wondering if I could pick your brain. I have a 97 F250 Powerstroke automatic and I'm having similar issues with with it downshifting at hwy speeds on the flats. I was hauling a steel stock trailer at around 60-65 mph and it would constantly "downshift" but I could throttle through it and it would act just fine for a little bit. My fuel mileage decreased drastically and used a considerable amount of oil, more than normal. I noticed that it would do the same at 45+ but lower speeds were normal. The next day, without the trailer, my truck ran completely fine, I tried to get it to act up but nothing abnormal, only with a trailer. The mechanic I had check it out came up empty also since he couldn't get it to act up either. There was a P1111 code when I scanned it and the ABS light also came on with the initial "downshift" trip. Hope you have some insights. Thanks!

Please make a new thread in the future and reference a post.
Is your brake lights working fine on the trailer? 14v on and 0 off
If not then TC will unlock feeling like a down shift.
P1111 is a pass code.
ABS has a code you should look at.
