10 Speed automatic transmission

While watching football yesterday and new Ford pickup adds they talk about a new 10 speed automatic trans. What do you need 10 speeds in a automatic transmission for ?????

it helps keep the engine at an optimum RPM for fuel efficiency.

I really don't know. I figure about 5 is wonderful, if a lockup converter is used. 10 speeds is like 1=0-7 mph, 2=7-12 mph, 3=12-20mph, 4=20-27 mph, 5=27-35 mph, 6=35-42 mph, 7=42-50 mph, 8=50-57 mph, 9=57-65 mph, 10=65+ mph, that is a lot of shifting. Big trucks run 18 speed, but they only rev to about 2000 rpm. seems likewith a gasoline power band, much more than 6 or 7 speeds is futile.

...So Ford can meet fleet-wide C.A.F.E. standards required by the soon-to-be former POTUS and EPA.

Farm tractors have used these multi speed configurations like 20+ speeds, 30+ speeds, massey had a 4 speed, with a high range and low range, with a 4 speed power shift. It was like low 1 (1-4) 2 (1-4) 3 (1-4) 4 (1-4) high 1 (1-4) 2 (1-4) 3 (1-4) 4 (1-4) That is 32 speeds, and like a car, when you utilized that things power you used them. Baling or corn chopping you would run pto rpm and full hydraulics and vary your speed from 2-5 mph and always try to keep the feeder full. It was pretty cool. Maybe ford wants something like that.

Whenever I see new "technology" like that, my first thought? What in the world is that going to cost to fix?
Unlike most people, I tend to keep my vehicles, maintain them, drive them till the wheels fall off, then install new wheels.
Maintenance/repair costs are a big factor in my decision to buy anything.

fixing things is becoming a lost art.

I agree totally. I wander around and look at automatic doors, 10 speed transmissions, power rear slider windows, and can't help but wonder "how bad is that when it quits working?" Just like a power rear slider, if it fails, you aren't able to close it? Fun Stuff! I agree. First thing I ask when looking at anything from a skil saw, a chain saw, a truck, a car, a motorcycle, a tractor, a combine, a backhoe, a anything. Can I fix it?

It really is pointless. I had a loaner BMW sport utility that had an 8 spd transmission. Shifted all the time and at most moved maybe 500-700 rpms a shift.

Anything past 6 is overkill, especially in a gasoline engine with such a huge power band.

If I'm not mistaken, I do believe the 10 speed trans is in the diesel f150s. Unless they're putting them in both. They're adding a 3.0 powerstroke engine as a option.

Concur. I wanted a Ferrari F355 but further research indicated that it comes with an "engine out" service that costs about $10,000 . Given that inherent liability, I looked at that marginal cost and stepped up to buy a 360 whose cam belts/tensioners/variators replacements can be done with the engine installed.

Concur. That's why the 360 has its own mutual fund account. I already replaced one of its fuel pumps to the tune of $650.

The 360 has an F1 transmission (Six on the tree!) and its top speed is supposed to be 186 MPH. Six gears really stretches its legs so it would make sense for an exotic. I've pushed it to 140 mph... with the top up.

Exactly my experience with factory sunroofs. Once the track is misaligned....well, have fun with that when winter is coming. Sometimes simpler is better.
