Hey I have a crazy question and I'm hoping someone like number dummy can help me out. I found an old 79 f250 for sale but his title says it is an f263? Is this something that makes sense or is it a sign to run away?
Vin numbers on the door and cab both match the title.
There is no cab VIN on these years. Are you talking about the sticker inside the driver door frame? The actual VIN for title purposes is stamped in the frame on the passenger side either near the alternator or up under the cab. The tag on the door is a warranty plate and the DMV will not accept it for titling. (Ask me how I know....) The sticker was emissions info IIRC. It is good that the door tag matches nonetheless as that means the driver door is likely original.
If you want to be sure, check the frame stamped VIN on the passenger side frame rail.
As for your original question, some states use the factory model designation on the title. Look at your truck's warranty plate. That's the metal plate that's mounted to the driver's door, just below the latch. Second line, third entry is "MODEL". In your case it should read F263, for 1979 that crosses over to: pickup, F250, 4WD, 6700 GVW.
