I bought a 77 f100 custom that was left for dead and the truck was a One owner with original title and owners manual. The seller said he thought it was a blown engine but after I got it home and began to play around with it I found a starter that was shot and both the top and bottom will turn by hand. It is a 4.9 300 inline 6 with 400,000 plus on it. I plan to go through the whole drive train and rebuild all necessary parts. I was looking for advice on what to expect and what have on hand to do this the best way and end up with a truck to restore and tool around in. I have never done anything this big before all on one vehicle but have plenty of experience with doing my own mechanical work.
Welcome to FTE-lots of good people here and often willing to help.
As you get a chance, read through the "read me first" at the top of the page. Lots of suggestions, knowledge and advice in there.
How long was the truck sitting? I'd expect it to leak out of every gasket and seal. 400k is a lot of miles, no matter how well maintained. Check the compression and leak down. Might be time for a rebuild
Check the brakes. Clean the fuel tank(s) and replace the soft lines. Check out the electrical for anything glaring. And get a fire extinguisher...just in case
And post pictures...we love pictures, and they're each worth a thousand words!
Too add to papa bear's post. Before starting the engine for the first time. I would pull all the spark plugs and fill the cylinders with a mixture of a good penetration oil and atf and let it sit for a day or so. Maybe longer. That way if the rings are stuck or sticky they have a chance of freeing up. The change the oil and start it after you do what papa bear suggested. And oh yeah post pics
I forgot to mention. If you do fill the cylinders with oil. Before you put your new spark plugs in. Disconnect your coil and crank the engine over a few times. That will blow the remaining oil out. And won't hydro lock the engine. And make a little mess.
