AC "whump"

The AC on my '03 Ranger 4x4 4.0L SOHC makes a "whump" sound when I turn it on. It's not terribly loud, but noticible if I don't have the radio on. This is my first new Ford - is this normal? I've never heard this in my previous autos.

Umm mine and in my 2000 ranger made a grinding type noise when you turned it on, righr after starting it up. I dunno if thats what your talking about......

You are hearing the "doors" in the air handler. It drove me crazy, too, until I found out what it was...
