I have a 2003 4x4 5.4 7700 Just under a 100000 K A week ago I had a U joint changed I then went on a trip and noticed that while driving I could hear a whump whump noise not loud but noticeable ( iwasn't sure if it was new or not) while on my trip i had to use four wheel drive it didn't work the light came on and it clicked but the front wheels did not engage. I took it to the shop and they confirmed that the 4x4 didn't work put it on the hoist and it did'nt work took it off the hoist and it works. drove home the light whumping noise is still their. When on the hoist the mechanic said he could hear a soft noise in the front differential
Problem is that the warranty people will not pay without a specific problem the mechanic says they have to take it apart to try and find out if their is a problem and no explanation why the 4x4 works again
The two may not be related. A whump whump to me sounds like mine did when the wheel bearings were bad. I thought it was a tire then not long after that i got a squealing sound. Not long after that my front right wheel bearing exploded. Have you ever lubed the front bearings?
Does the "whump whump" noise change at different speeds? Most of have had warped brake rotors. The rubbing noise keeps pace with the speed of the vehicle. Is it anything like that?
