So I finally got my 83 F-250 running. Here in Kansas we do not have vehicle inspections. Instead when you wish to register a vehicle for the first time in the state you first have to get a "Vin Inspection." All they do is make sure your windshield vin matches the vin on your title. Well...someone before me must of replaced the windshield and put the wrong one on b/c the black going around the perimeter covers up my vin..They turned me away and told me I had to get a new windshield so they can see the vin. There is a vin stamp on the inside door but they said the state requires the vin on the windshield. I tried taking razor knife to it-nothing. Tried getting more aggressive with a screwdriver-nothing.
Anyone know what could help taking this off? Not trying to spend pointless money to replace a perfectly fine windshield..
Thanks
You are going to have to get a new windshield. Or carefully take that one out, show them the vin, and then put it back in place. It can be dicey getting the windshield out without breaking it though.
What does it cost now to have the guy come out and replace it? $200?

Yeah...I told them I would take off the dash so they could see it..they said no..Apparently its illegal to not have a vin visible from the outside-for police purposes...gotta love it.

You can thank the car thieves and people who steal license plates for that.
250$ is the lowest quote I got..called everyone in town...
I'll try taking my dash off and scraping away..if that don't work...I might try cutting some of dash off so they can see the vin..
That mask does not scrape off very well. As many bullnose trucks as there are around I can't believe they didn't at least lengthen the VIN cut out so it would work on these and later trucks. I bought a windshield for my crew cab and specifically told them I wanted the right one for the VIN to show. They installed it and it turned out to be the 87-96 style. They spent a week calling around and no one makes the right one anymore. They ended up special ordering one that has no mask (clear all the way to the edges), and the installer hand painted a primer mask to protect the adhesive. It does not look as nice as a factory mask, but the VIN shows as it should.

Yeah I talked to one of the glass guys..He said the black adhesive is baked on (they put it through a kiln) and I would not be able to remove it.
The issue is the lazy glass guys that now glue everything in. BTW that is a primer that sticks to glass better than the glue.
You say that is the way that came from the factory? No they did not!
They used butyl tape or rope that comes in different thickness. It is put on the trucks pinch weld then the glass installed with rubber blocks at the bottom so the glass does not move down over time.
When you talked to the glass people did you tell them what the issue was and asked if there was some way to scrape it off with out needing to replace the glass?
lacquer thinner on Qtips maybe?

I would think he is talking about newer glass.
Older glass with out the boarder they brush on a primer, I thought that's what you had, before they glue it in.

Don't know where in my home state you are, but a few years ago I re-sold a pickup that started its life in Ark City to a guy back in Ark City. But, while I had it I had the windshield replaced, and they used the wrong one. My brother found an inspector in Winfield that used a mirror after my brother pulled the dash cover, and was able to verify the VIN.
I just replaced my windshield in my 82 F-100. Out the door cost was $142.92 from Safelite. $117.95 parts + $60.00 Labor =$177.95. Then I asked for a discount and they gave me $25 off, then I went online and found a discount code for $20 off and applied it.
I was told by a glass professional that you can not "glue this kind of glass" you must use the butyl tape, Problems will occur down the road by gluing, up to and including cracking....And also the aluminum trim applies constant "minor pressure" on the glass at all times.
I just replaced the original Carlite windshield last week in the 83. Glass guy shows up the first day with a windshield that had the black band across the bottom. He couldNt use it because it covered the vin so he came back The next day with a windshield of a different manufacturer. The black stuff isnt coming off so you might as well plan on another window.
