This past weekend, the windshield on my 1986 F150 was replaced due to being cracked. It was serviced by a locally recognized high quality shop. I was very impressed with the personal care shown by the owner/installer and his helper!
I noticed that the windshield was manufactured in China. I also noticed there was not a black band around the outer edge of the interior side of the glass. The outer edge was thoroughly cleaned with some specific solvent and then using a special applicator, the neatest black band was uniformly applied around the windshield prior to the installation. What this does is to allow one windshield to fit all years of our style truck without obscuring the VIN location, since the band is custom made.
I was quite pleased with the installation!
By the way, for comparative purposes, the total job was $175.
You may have got lucky. It seems to be difficult nowadays to get a windshield that does not have imperfections in it. Sit in it and look through it very carefully, moving your head slightly while doing so. Most windshields have ripples and imperfections which distort what you are looking at through the glass.
Hey Dave,
Thanks for the tip. I'm going to need a new windshield in El Guapo when it gets close to done, and was a little concerned about getting the correct one so the vin can be seen. One more thing I can mark off my worry list. '
Good to hear from you, Ron! Before the summer is over, how about my wife and I meet you and yours at a half way point and have a burger? If El Guapo is complete, that would be great, but if not, it doesn't matter.
Nice! $175 is very reasonable... hopefully that's what they'll charge around here for it since my windshield leaks and it has a couple cracks so it's not really worth resealing.
