429 & Edelbrock

Have an Edelbrock carb, 400 cfm if I recall correctly, but stock intake manifold for a 429, all possibly going into my '74. Even if the carb is compatible with the stock manifold, which I don't know for sure, what are your thoughts about mating it up to an Edelbrock intake?

I would double check the cfm rating on your Edelbrock carb. 400 cfm seems pretty low for a 429 ci engine. Here's a cfm calculator you can use to get you in the ball park:

To determine what intake you are going to use you definitely need to know what cam your using. Edelbrock makes good carbs and intakes, I'm sure they have something that would fit your motor.

I don't think Ford ever put a 429 in our beloved dentsides, so you'd need to verify the engine. They did put a 460 in, but not that far back.

The 460 was the only four barrel intake you're likely to find on a stock motor. There was supposedly a 4 barrel factory 390, but I hear it's owned by Bigfoot.

The factory four barrel is a one-off design that looks sort of like a spreadbore in that is has tiny primaries and huge secondaries. The MotorCraft carb sucked, so Ford replaced them with special Holleys.

The 429 and 460 use the same heads and intake unless the 429 is a cobra jet or police interceptor. Those are different

Edelbrock makes the intake for the 429/460 in both spreadbore and squarebore design. Easy to identify as it has 460 cast into it.

Agreed that 400 CFM sounds small-especially for a thirsty four barrel. Edelbrock recommends the 750 CFM for the 454 and 460. The 600 would likely be plenty

on the front of the choke horn there will be a number that starts with "LIST" - followed by a number

google holley , list -number
this should tell you what the carb is
"list" is the list number for the parts that went into building the carb

I thought most of the truck 390's were 4 barrel at that time.
I've seen a couple that had the stock type iron manifold, and even briefly owned one in a '75 F150.
The part number on the manifold started with D4TE or something like that and had a motorcraft 4350 on it so I'm pretty sure it was factory...

My 77 F350/460 came from the factory with a 4350, but was changed by Ford to a Holley. The Holley was a special smog design that had the idle mixture screws turn out to lean, instead of in. Mr Bill says this was a Ford fix, like a recall.

I couldn't get mine tuned adequately after the rebuild, so I replaced the intake and carb with Edelbrock. Truck is happier and gets better mileage.

You can read about the 4350 here: Comparing the Motorcraft 4350 Spreadbore Carburetor

The stock 385 series 4 barrel intake, 460/429 equipment, flows fine and is a very good unit for truck type engines, ans the edelbrock performer 460 is a lighter aluminum counterpart of the stock, meaning that perfromance gains will only be felt by no longer carrying the heavy iron intake but instead carrying a lighter-by-30+ pounds aluminum unit. Moral of the story is that the factory iron intake is going to flow identical to the $$$$ edelbrock performer. If you are in the market for a new, lightweight, 4bbl intake, money would be best spent on anything but an edelbrock performer. buy a weiand stealth 8021, or even a weiand stealth 8012, or a performer RPM, and then you not only have lost the weight, increases physique, but also added performance.
