... Secondly, can I order a F250 with a GVWR higher than 10k, or do I need to step up to the F350 for that?...
Highest official GVWR for the 2017 F250 is 10K, no matter what configuration. If you want/need more, then you have you go to an F350 SRW (officially up to 11.5K depending on configuration).
Well that's good to know. Is there an upper limit? Say I have the dealer set it to 25psi...will it be unhappy when I run 50-80psi?
TPMS simply reports the tire pressure to a module in the vehicle. It sets off the alarm if the reported pressure is lower than the set threshold.
The Ford also displays actual tire pressure readings. Here's what the alarm looks like when you have a low pressure issue...this is a screenshot of my 2017 dually with leaking valve stems:
Most dealers won't do the change to the alert threshold due to liability. As said above, it can be done with the free Forscan program and an OBD2 adapter. Check out the Forscan Spreadsheet thread for details on this and a lot of other good changes you can make.
No 3/4 ton (250/2500) can be rated over 10k as they are limited by being a Class 2 truck on paper. They can be de-rated but the GVWR can't be increased. SRW 350 is the way to go if you want more GVWR. It rides about identical and costs pretty close to the same too.
Why would you not want a warning? Are you driving on sand dunes?
Because I don't need to run 80psi on an empty truck 80% of the time. It rides like a brick and will wear the centers of the tires. Then with aftermarket wheels and larger tires, you can run even less pressure to make them wear even.
TPMS is another useless expense and maintenance/nagging item that is unneeded....no thanks to Ford/Firestone causing it to become law
Nanny-state crap that a lot of people don't want.

Yeah, I kinda figured that about the liability. I did glance through the spreadsheet thread. I think it's great that the program is available to the end user...can't do that with Ram. You gotta go to the dealership and hope the mechanic knows what you want done...and does it right without screwing up anything else. Then you have to PAY for it

I am against government intervention / requirements on most matters, but I disagree that TPMS is a waste. I really enjoy being able to see the pressures displayed, and I appreciate the warning that comes on automatically when a tire is low. Driving a dually, it would be difficult to notice a tire, particularly an inner tire, becoming soft.
