4WD Trans Issue

I have a 2001 Ford Explore Sport with transmission issue. Currently the truck will not go into any gear in normal drive but will move once I engage the 4 wheel drive. SOMETIME after it sits for days it will perform normally but for only a few minutes. Do I need to rebuild or simply replace a few solenoids?

The motor drives the transmission.. The transmission drives the transfer case... the Transfer case has 3 different "gear" positions for 2 - 4LO- 4 HI gearing and that drives the front and rear axles. Since you can move in 4 wheel drive, it would appear the transmission is working ??? When you move from 2 to 4 wheel drive, you move things inside the TRANSFER CASE...... Im no expert on the internals of the case, but I would guess you have a TRANSFER CASE problem inside. ....... There is an electric motor that moves the internals from 2- 4LO- 4HI gears... It is POSSIBLE that the motor is not moving full stroke to get back to the 2 wheel drive position... One test would be to remove the electric motor and see if you can rotate the input shaft FURTHER toward the 2 wheel drive position, with the elect motor setting on the floor.

Thanks for that input Steve. So I went and tried what you mentioned and here's what I learned both from the owner and my test drive. Originally he was driving along just fine when he came to a stop sign and when he went to take out again he heard a pop/ping sound which upon hearing this the truck would not move. He then switched over to 4WD and drove the truck home and there is has set for almost a year. So when I went to try to and perform a test this time in 2WD when you go into R or D there seems to be an attempt to move but does not go but when you put it in 2 or 1 it will move forward. Now when I switched over to 4WD HI there is very little movement in R or D and the same for 4WD LO yet in LO it will move a little more both forward and backwards. When switching from 2WD to 4WD HI there is no sound of engagement but when you go into or come out of 4WD LO there is a engagement sound (Slight grind?). Last but not least and not sure if this matters....this truck was recently in a flood that only got up to the lower part of the transmission but he drove the truck for another 2 months just fine.

well that does sound more like a transmission problem. I thought when it was in 4HI or 4 LO the truck was moving fine in forward and rev... It appears it " tries to move a little" when in 4LO, which is should since you have a much lower gear ratio..I think pulling the transmission oil pan and seeing if it has water/ trash/ burnt oil inside is a good idea... The way it sounds, it is probably too late to save it.
