Electronic Transfer Case

I have a 1988 Ford Broncc with an Electronic Transfer Case that my son drives. The other day he went to get in it and it sounded like the transfer case was partialy locked in making a grinding noise when he would try to go into reverse. We put it into 4WD quite a few times to engege the tranfer case. We thought it was fixed but when he took it for a drive the tranfer case started making a gringing noise and the truck seemed to be in neutal but the transmision was in drive, we stoped put it in 4WD and the problem went away but keeps comming back. Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks for any help

well that is a very very very big problem. the tcase can not be driven on pavement in 4wd it will cause the gears to bind real bad. sounds like its time for a rebuild. i would drain the gear oil and inspect for metal. then look into swaping to a manual tcase because the electric ones are headaches and never work right
