no not the key but the switch on the column. Guess this may have been part of my problem with my E450. It was traced to fuel pump, but even with new pump installed problem still exists. here is a link: Symptoms of a Bad Ignition Switch | DoItYourself.com
Have had the new pump installed, power (?) to pump but no fuel pressure thus no start still exists. We did change TPS, found the cam sensor to be loose but still nothing. Now the culprit might be the ignition switch, that is what a ford site indicates is why there is a hung starter condition. New new switch on order, but out of curiosity want to know what circuits the switch does control so if you might have a PDF copy or link it would be appreciated. Still no codes as they come up and then clear themselves in minutes (using notebook scanner).
Stuck in RV at garage in Flagstaff, wife wants to get home as trip has gone bad.
If you have power to the pump, and you have no fuel pressure, that makes no sense.
Is the pump actually running? If it is, and there's no pressure at the rail, then it's not electrical.
I have an EVTM on disk for my 2001 that includes the E-series, but there are multiple sheets showing the ignition switch, and besides, it's just Accessory, Run and Start. Accessory supplies power to the accessories, Run supplies power to the accessories and the PCM and the rest of the vehicle. But the starter hanging does point at either the ignition switch, OR:
In a low-voltage condition, the amperage drastically increases, and the starter solenoid can actually weld itself together because of the arcing at the contacts. When the starter hung, how did you get it to stop?
Ok thanks for responding but as I have indicated in my post NOTHING is showing up electrically on the computer/scanners. Yes power at pump but it does not work. they took old pump and got it to run yesterday, so why did it not work to begin with? Will try to hot wire pump today and see if it works then change ignition switch when it comes in to see what it does. The wrench light and hung starter started at same time and as the link reads this is characteristic of failed switch. Cause multiple problems at a time. I am not a techie so need to see what the switch connects and does.
nothig installed. They hot wired the pump and the engine started and ran! waiting to pickup the switch in about an hour. Went to dealer and he did not have a switch either. While talking with them they acknowledged the switch will cause issues if it goes bad. You can get same part number from motorcraft that ford uses for about $30 less at Orielly's. If this turns out to be the issue hope this will help others tht may have same issue.
I hope so, for your sake. It'll be the first time, I think, we've heard of an ignition switch doing this. Especially the fuel pump not running. Usually, it's all tied in together.
Can you find the inertia switch and see if it's tripped?
Inertia only shuts power off and it is not where the manual calls for it. Looked in rs kick panel for it. As to the switch being a problem maker, both ford dealers I went to said it is a trouble maker, and even the link I posted noted that fact. Should know tomorrow as the switch did not come in today and is supposed to be here at 0800? I didnt know about the switch itself, probably many dont. Issues associated with it may be reported as something else IDK?
Ok finally made it home. It turns out to be a variety of issues electric and fuel. replaced fuel pump and it still did not work, power to pump was OK. Replaced the ignition switch engine started then died, back to where we started. further found loose cam sensor, bad TPS, suspect battery, and fuel cap not maintaining pressure. Replaced all still no start.
Shop was running FORD diagnostics as they work on a variety of 5.4s thus has to buy annually the ford programs and updates. Still no codes to be found. finally went to the fuel pump module and changed it out and viola everything worked!
Said this is 1st time they had ever encountered such a situation, usuallly when pump diagnosed replace and go, but not this time. Rv actually seemed to run better than ever before after all this, so lets keep fingers crossed.
Do have to give a GOOD recommendation to North Country Diesel in Flagstaff AZ for all the effort and at reasonable costs. We stayed in the RV while work went on. Put slides out at night pulled bedroom in during day since most work at rear and under front hood/driver compartment. They provided electric service, just no sewer available.
