We just bought a large camper we are towing with our 2002 Excursion 7.3 We towed it around 500 miles and noticed oil everywhere when we stopped. There is a pint or so of oil in the valley, and it looks like it slobbered everywhere. I put in some UV dye and ran it for an hour, and it's not even dripping now. Is it possible to only have a leak under load? I was hoping it would be the HPOP fitting, but I have no idea where it is coming from.
Since you did drop in dye, my next step would be to simple green and spray the crap out of the engine taking the alt and 42 pin on drivers side valve cover into consideration.
Clean it up surgically and see what you see.
Should be an easy pinpoint.

(And everything acts like a redheaded stepchild when you strap in a ball to the bumper, or install a goose or 5'r hitch)
I have a love hate relationship with this damn truck, and I am leaning more towards hate right now. We lost around 4 qts of oil, so I figured it shouldn't be too hard to find. Two hours of running around town, cleaned out the valley and flushed the PEE hole, and now it isn't dripping ANYWHERE. WTF?

Strap your load back on ad give it hell. Do it locally and see if it is indeed the load. I've experienced this and make sure your looking at engine oil and not trans fluid.
These guys have a tendency to purge out of the front seal when hot and suck it back up when cooled. (transmission)
If that's the cause after you examine it, upgrade your cooler since you tow.
Other than that?? We wait and we watch.
Better to do the bell ringer close to home.. Try and mimic the time you took the puff.
You will find it/them. It is a 15 year old truck and will have issues come up. Although, it is still better than having a $600+/month payment for 7 years for a new truck.
If you still have some dye left, one of the other FTE guys had great luck with it being put into the HPOP reservoir instead of the oil pan.
