While cleaning the positive cable I decided to pull the starter motor for inspection. Bench testing showed that it had bad noises when running.
The planet gears are bone dry as is the end cap bearing. I am thinking of using 30 W ND oil for the end cap. Not sure what grease to use on the gears because the ring gear is plastic and some greases can damage plastic. Should grease or oil be used on the needle bearings in the small gears?
I am replacing the brush assembly since it is disassembled.
No grease? It needs something. What is electronic lube? You mean a graphite based "Dry Lube" ? That may be what I was seeing. I thought it was dried grease. Solvents would not cut it well. I had to wire brush it to remove it. Grease normally cuts well with gasoline and lacquer thinner. I can't see dry lube working on the tiny needle bearings in the planet gears. Anyway it is too late. I found some grease that is safe for plastics. It is on the planetary gear assembly including the needle bearings. I used Lucas Red "N" Tacky other places.
When I have to guess I use silicone grease. I don't know enough about it to say it is right but I haven't seen it hurt anything yet. Caliper grease, dielectric grease and high pressure oring grease are all applications I have seen. I think some edible grease may also be silicone grease.
I am sure there are situations where it is not good but so far when I didn't use it I end up wishing I had.
CV joint grease is another favorite if I have to guess.
Silicone Grease is not a good lubricant for most things. It should be used only sliding rubber joints like spark plug boots and water tight connectors. It can also be used for sealing electrical connectors and light bulbs. It is not a good choice for dynamic metal to metal contact.
Food Grade lubricants are not really edible. It means that incidental contact or ingestion is not harmful.
My favorite general purpose grease is Super Lube. Favorite spray lube is Tri-Flow.

Caliper grease is silicone grease. I can't remember using it for any high-speed stuff but I probably have.
Any idea what edible grease is based on? Silicone?
don't put anything on the shaft where the Bendix slides. you will end up with a starter that wont engage when it gets cold. sometimes all the time.
small amount of grease in the bearing and bushing is ok.
I have an old mower (garden tractor) that requires lubrication on the spiral worm gear looking shaft that the starter drive slides on. I use graphite spray but don't remember if that is what the factory stuff is. Every couple years it quits working and needs a shot of lube.
