Engine problem...Injector?

I recently started a thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-injector.html) asking if it was OK to replace one bad injector when the injectors only had 50,000 on them. I would like to re-approach this in a different way.

What originally happened was that my daughter took my '04 F350, 6.0 PSD, camping. The truck started running a little rough, putting grey smoke out the exhaust and consuming a lot of fuel. She thought the engine was a little more noisy than normal. She slowly drove it back to town and straight to a Ford dealer. They diagnosed it with a bad #8 injector. I had it towed home.

After watching the suggested injector replacement videos that Bismic posted in the Used Injectors thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ml#post4355612), plus this youtube video (
), I carefully, methodically replaced the injector as shown in the videos.

Upon startup, there was a knocking sound coming from the top of the right bank. A steady stream of grey smoke was coming out of the exhaust. I was hoping the knocking sound was maybe air in the fuel and would work itself out. The truck has a slight miss in the idle. As the engine warmed up, the smoke became darker. The knocking sound persisted. Finally after 10-15 minutes of idling, I shut off the truck.

I'm not sure what to do now. I am apprehensive to start it again. I don't want to make things worse.

Thank you in advance for your help.

The video you posted above is for the right bank (passenger side), but #8 is the back one on the drivers side (left side). You probably already know that (so I'll apologize in advance for wondering), but I was just wondering why you posted the video for the passenger side.

Also, did you install a Ford remanned injector?

I have to ask ......

Since Mark brought this up, did you replace the correct one?

Second, since you've mentioned that you watched vids before doing the work, I have to ask other basic questions.
  • Did you make sure the threaded hole for the injector was free of oil?
  • Did you use a torque wrench to tighten the injector screw to the proper spec?
  • And what torque wrench did you use?
  • Did you make sure the old copper washer was not left in the hole?

All of those situations can lead to fuel getting into the chamber.

We have an 04 and replaced injectors. In 04 there were two different styles of injectors make sure you had the correct part.

A number of Ford techs have commented they mixed the injectors and not found issues. The coating change alters the efficiency but the software adjusts for it the same way it adjusts for injector variation of the same version.

I believe in eating crow while it is still warm ......I did put the new injector in #7 instead of #8. I incorrectly assumed that the even numbered cylinders are on the passenger side like a lot of gas V8 engines. BIG first-timer mistake. Ford always has numbered the cylinders on their V8s differently than other manufacturers. I first learned that when I was 17, trying to help a friend figure out why the 302 in his Maverick was running poorly after he did a full tune-up.

Yes I did buy my injector from Ford. I made sure the bolt hole and injector hole was free of debris and oil. I did torque the injector down with an older Proto clicker type torque wrench that was checked for accuracy (along with my other three torque wrenches) 2 years ago. The old copper washer came out with the old injector. When I bought the injector, I told the guy at the parts counter that my truck was a late (02/04) '04 build.

So here is my question, before I start spinning wrenches again. Tearing apart the passenger side is a pain in the butt. I am considering just replacing the bad injector in cylinder 8 with the one I took out of cylinder 7, along with a new copper washer and o-rings. Any problems with that?

Thank you for all your replies and help!

Personally, my time is worth more than the $200 for another injector. I would put a new one in #8.

If you have (or have had in the past) fuel pressure issues, these back injectors are the most "at risk".

Excellent point. That's what I'll do. Good thing this is a five day weekend for me. I have plenty of time to fix my bad assumptions.

I'll X2 Mark, if it was a stick not from a rear hole I might say do it, but $200 for a part is relatively cheap on a 6.0. Do it right the first (errrrrr.... second ) time

I think it might be difficult to find since so many people don't catch it in time, so let me add it here for the next guy:

YOU DO NOT KNOW NEARLY ENOUGH TO WORK ON A 6.0L JUST BECAUSE YOU WORKED ON SOME OTHER CAR OR DIESEL.

It is VERY different, there are a lot of things you need to understand that do not come to you through experience on other engines.

READ, READ, READ! FIRST!1!!

In reference to Idahoser...... Ford didn't make this engine Not something that most people think of really, I mean what kind of a nerd knows that the 6.0 was made by Navistar, or a Duramax isn't as red blooded-American as GM wants you to think it is and is really an Izuzu joint venture? Details kill you sometimes.

You guys don't know how many times I scream at the computer screen saying it's not a Ford engine.

Nixoninc, it depends on how tight money vs time is. If you reuse the older injector just make sure you're using Ford seals, even though it's not a ... well you know.

Sorry for the upfront questions but I don't know you. And I too after decades of small block Ford stuff have to think about the numbering on this motor.

BTW, the pass side can be a little tight depending on how your engine sits. Mine is tight to the HVAC box so I have to remove it's cover to get in there.

Nixoninc, I applaud you for admitting your mistake. A lot of people would just drop off thread and not reply back, thank you. It'll make others think twice about not checking Manuels.
