You mean the manual that was printed BEFORE Ford even developed MERCON V? And before Ford discontinued MERCON? There is no longer ANY MERCON fluid available. Dex/Merc can be ANYTHING. There is no Dex/Merc spec.
MERCON V is the correct fluid for an E4OD. See my signature, below.
hi u r expert for tranny please i need your help
Im from Europe please help me E4od in 7,3idi 1990/91 4x4
So Mark, some updates for you. Where you said "I wouldn't use it. It is a one size fits all fluid that does not have a Ford license that it meets Ford specs. It also troubles me that the front says DEX/MERC, and on the back it doesn't say anything except MERCON LV. There actually isn't a spec for DEX/MERC, so any fluid can say DEX/MERC.".
I looked at the Valvoline site and even though the back of the bottle says nothing except Mercon LV, their data sheet shows this:
So again, multi use not ideal but it does say Mercon by it self too. I'm still gonna get that stuff outta there and put in just Mercon. No drain on the torque converter which is a bummer so I'll do the drain through the hardline method while adding.
i have problem in europe havent mercon i give atf dextron ii
DEXRON II is very close to MERCON. Will it work in place of MERCON? I don't know, and I don't know anyone that's tried it.

This could be a seal problem which means a rebuild. Type F has the wrong additives for that transmission so you should get that changed with MERCON V. I find it hard to believe that you cannot get MERCON V. Have you asked local parts stores to order it for you or have you tried ordering it online? I have no idea what the shipping would cost but the wrong fluid will destroy that transmission.
I’m not sure what you are asking. Are those numbers cast into the housing or on a sticker?

yes is very expensive shipping and vat and tax
over 120% more and wait 3 weeks
What about Mobil synthetic transmission fluid? Mark K can chime in on that one - Mobil has a recommended fluid replacement. I’m not sure if there is a specific one, or if it is just ‘Mobil synthetic transmission fluid.’
If you can not find it, I would order Mercon V rated, regardless of price. Someone in Europe should have it, or a ford dealer can order some.
Once you have the correct fluid, which may be very expensive for the first fluid change, you will have time to shop around for better prices or fluid options for the future.
Other wise, you are experimenting. And changing out transmissions is going to get real expensive.
Im not sure what those casing numbers are. ‘37’ is embossed on my E4OD. I’ve wondered what they designate too.

FYI, if the case is vertical, it's easier to load the guts into it. If it is horizontal, it's easier to get the valve body installed. Keep that in mind.
I used an engine rebuilt stand and made a dedicated mount just for the E4OD. It worked out great.

ok thank you
good idea
i fix over 25 years only old mercedes with manual my jeep is manual too i have only diesel engines
I have fixed Mercedes since 1988. I made a lot of money doing that. Enough to retire at 52. Now I just have a small one man shop and fix Mercedes/BMW.
When I made my mount for the transmission, make certain the tail shaft is not going to hit the base of the engine stand. If you have an engine stand, you seem to have the skills/material to make it. A welder and steel is all I used.
