Motorcraft Mercon V should not be used in transfer cases. It has a warning right on the bottle.

So to reiterate, in your opinion, 1000 to 1500 miles with LV in it on a newly rebuilt transmission that had like 600 miles on the rebuild is pending inevitable failure even if I switch it out with Mercon V?

Mercon LV is now the recommended oil for use in all transfer cases.

You can do as you described, or even better, do this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...-transmission/
Sorry Mark, trying not to bug you, but I looked at some old text messages the mobile tech sent me as to what he put in the trans that 1,500 miles or so ago......
Thoughts?

That's not what I said. If he totally filled it with MERCON LV it will fail. I don't know how long, but LV is WAY too thin for the E4OD.

I wouldn't use it. It is a one size fits all fluid that does not have a Ford license that it meets Ford specs. It also troubles me that the front says DEX/MERC, and on the back it doesn't say anything except MERCON LV. There actually isn't a spec for DEX/MERC, so any fluid can say DEX/MERC.

That's kind of what I was asking is if he put LV in and it has only 1500 miles on the LV, it will fail no matter what even I flush it with Mercon V going forward?

No, I don't think so. If you get the LV out there may be more wear than if the right fluid was used, but I wouldn't expect that the failure is inevitable.

hey Mark... I don't have your fluid change instructions in front of me but I'm trying to buy the Merc V to change it so I hope you're on...not changing the filter or dropping the pan so I need 17 quarts right?
thanks Mark

Come on man, changing the filter is quite easy, and with fresh fluid it just makes sense, you might be interested in making a safety-clip to keep it from falling, too.

Mark is the expert on the E4OD and in his instructions he said that he's seen filters with well over 200k that were no where near clogged. My truck has never been worked hard or put through too much dust up here in NE Georgia mountains so I'll leave it be...

The transmission filter is not there to 'filter' the fluid, it is there to to keep large particles/chunks from being recirculated through the transmission. However, if you pull the filter and notice large particles/chunks, then the transmission is in need of a rebuild.

Instructions say 18 quarts, but use/waste 20 quarts to assure all the old gets dumped out.
