In the last couple of months I've tried 4 ignition systems. I began with the annalog MSD 6a, when that died a smoking death after 8 years, I changed to the GM 4 pin, then tried the Summit Racing 850611 box, and landed back on an MSD 6a; this time the digital version.
I loved the analog MSD. It was peppy, mean with an attitude. Forum members had warned me the msd could fail, so I had a GM 4pin ready and bolted to my fender. The 4 pin is a simple oem, non aggressive module. It was okay, but I wanted that MSD feeling of power.
Then I saw the Summit box 850611. All the specs said it had more power, spark, etc., than the MSD. But I found it a step down from the analog MSD. I sent it back and replaced it with the digital MSD 6a. I will wire it up tomorrow.
There was a time when MSD was the best you could get. They are cheap Chinese electronics inside anymore.
Ive been having decent luck with the stock DS2. Ive got a mild 351/M400, eddy carb and intake, duals, makes enough power.....the DS2 box has been sunk dunked beaten and and run hard without failure. I keepa spare module and lower dist in the back just in case. Smooth idle, instant starts, no spark scatter and you can still get US made DS2 boxes from ford and napa.
If you are twisting a gazillion RPM DS2 may not be for you. Some of the guys here have said the GM HEI has treated them well too.
Chinese parts are flooding the US, that is true. Many of the trusted American auto parts are now made there, and come in a 'made in USA' box. But when you inspect, it says on the part 'make in China.' That is true of the DS2 boxes as well. Some are made in China. There is talk all over the forums of them failing.
About MSD: Yes, some of their stuff is made in China. However, they do have a facility in Texas where the boxes are made. How many of the components are US made, I don't know. I do know though, that you would feel a jump in performance by changing to an MSD.
For me, I'll stay with the MSD and keep a GM module bolted to my fender in case the MSD fails. If the MSD dies it takes me 10 minutes to plug in the GM and away I go.
