My battery light has been coming on and then going off, just back and forth, for a few days now. The light stays on about 80% of the time. I have new batteries and the alternator is about three years old. I've checked the voltage from the alternator to the batteries while the light is on and I'm getting 13.85 volts on the multimeter. I've checked and cleaned terminals just to be sure they are currosion free and right, I've checked the ground to make sure it's right. Anyone have any ideas?
Inspect the connections on the back of the alternator, the large terminal and the grey plastic plug and wires. If that's ok charge the batteries overnight and have them load tested. If they check out ok, 99.8% chance you need an alternator, a bench test might confirm that or not but that light is right. It's in a tricky circuit that turns on the light based on power reading from a couple of different points, not a simple low voltage equals light on type deal. It is typical for the light to go on and off with a failing alternator.
Another thing to consider is charging issues are hard on the FICM, I'd get this squared away quickly or FICM damage could show up in a few weeks or months.
I suggest replacing it with a 140a or better sized unit if it turns out to be the alternator.
