i have three Ford trucks so figured I'd join up.
Have a new addition with a few problems.
Found a burned up wire harness disconnected near the proportioning valve on my 1978 f250, 400m, manual trans.
Any idea what this went to?
The second major issue is it burns or leaks oil. Too much coating the underside to pin point the other end of harness.
Oil leak: only drip I can see is at the lower bell housing. But oil covering the bottom of the oil pan, but not leaking down the sides from valve covers and oil pan gasket. Some very small accumulation of oil on some oil pan bolts.
I'm guessing I gotta pull the trans to find and repair the leaks??
Reverse light harness looks like to me. Should be a switch on trans that it plugs into. Oil leak could be from back of intake manifold, rear main could be leaking also.
Found a burned up wire harness disconnected near the brake pressure differential (some call it a proportioning) valve on my 1978 F250, 400, manual trans.
Two possibilities:
Brake warning lamp switch threads into the brake pressure differential valve.
4 M/T backup lamp switch threads into the shift tower.
Thanks guys! So it is for the brake warning light?
Ok, did an oil change with reg ol conventional oil and a quart of Lucas oil leak additive. Also put on a much larger oil filter than the jiffy lube out in Washington had on there.
Seems to be under control for now, but haven't driven much since the fluid change. I do still have a drip forming slowly on the bottom of the flywheel housing.
I'll keep an eye on it. Don't want a tear down to fix a drip at 45k if not nessasary.
Let me know if any ideas or where to buy a new harness for the brake warning light.
Could cut it off my 79 parts truck , if the same?

The switch might be ok still. It's the wiring harness that is bad. More accurately, the wires going to it have no coating on them in a 8" area. From heat or chemical or both, I don't know exactly.
I'll need the harness and hoping the switch is fine. No blown fuses anywhere, so that's a plus.

Since the switch is the same, the wiring will be the same. That's why I listed the switch and its multiple applications.

The wire is probably from the brake proportion valve and lights up the "brake" light in the dash.
The oil leak could be pan seal but is probably main seal. No need to pull the transmission for that. You can pull the motor mount and transmission mount bolts, raise the engine, drop the pan and do it from underneath. It's a PITA, but can be done.
