However, if given time/location/tools, I would definitely do it myself. And enjoy it. And I wouldn't even mind if I failed, and had to do it again. As long as the vehicle downtime wouldn't add to the loss.

Just my two cents.
I am a real professional and I'll do a better job than ANYBODY working in an automotive parts rebuild sweatshop,
For that matter almost anyone could. No special tools are required
Those clowns are a joke.

You just buy a piston. No big deal
You only need a new caliper when
1) the bore is extremely pitted
2) the groove the seal rides in is corroded
3) it is cracked or broken - very rare

I tried one last ditch effort to free up the piston. Long story short, I am going to rebuild the calipers I have. I will post pics when I get some square cut seals and dust boots.

I'm following this to see mention of the Ebrake. Is it inside the rotor and did the cables line up? I have 1990 E350 w dually drum brake rear. I happen to have from a previous project a Dana 80 w huge discs but no ebrake. I will have to use a trans brake replacing trans tail section. I looked at street rod driveshaft brakes and they are real cute. Not at all suitable for 11500 GVW.
I also have a short 1990 E150 that I want to eventually do discs.

I haven't gotten that far yet..I will be starting a new job and $$ will be coming in so I should be able to get going on the project more quickly. The parking brake is a drum on the inside of the rear rotors. My parking is frozen so I will be replacing all the cables.

Caliper seals, dust boots, guide pins, boots and bolts have been ordered. The calipers needed a week to let the paint cure before I could touch them again. I will post pics soon.

Front caliper brackets are nasty. I will see if I can get them media blasted. Original finish is black paint.

$20 and a day later the front calipers are back from being media blasted. I've get them in black paint as they were originally.

Caliper brackets done for the front. I need to get some front calipers, rotors, front hoses, wheel bearings, and speed sensors then I am done.

Rear caliper parts should be here tomorrow or Monday. It gives me something to do. I will keep updating as progress continues.

I like those reconditioned parts. I commend you. I do fear the rear conversion project might go poorly somewhere in the middle. I'll be watching.
Great work so far.

What concerns would you have about the rear?

Here are my plans.

I am going to be replacing the rear axle and brakes as one big assembly. I have a new 8.8 that is going in .

My parking brake is shot so I have to replace the cables anyways.

I am aware that the master cylinder is different. That will be changed soon too.

Rear calipers are done. New seals and boots are installed. It's pretty straightforward to replace them.

So I have the rear calipers rebuilt, loaded and complete. I need rear spindles, and a set of loaded splash shields.

Tip: put the dust boot on the piston then insert the piston into the body of the caliper. This is the old boot to demonstrate.

Below is the death of a caliper. This one is too far gone so I will be getting new ones from work once my paycheck comes in.

I'm blown away at the rust you guys experience.
Glad to see you rebuilt the rears. Some are so scared of doing something that really is simple.

Rust is always a serious issue. If Illinois used sand instead of salt it might not be so bad. No updates yet. Just earning money to get it finished.

I have purchased all the brake hoses and lines specific for 2004-06 disc brakes. I will post pics of them when they arrive.

Next update will be on the front brakes.

The junkyard just picked up an 04 E150. I got the master cylinder off today. I will be going back tomorrow for the booster, rear spindles, splash shields, and anything else I can grab.

Here is the 2004-06 master cylinder next to the 1992-03 master cylinder. Make sure if you have cruise control, you get one with a cut-off switch provision.

Cut-off switch was redesigned, so make sure to reuse the original switch from 2003 or older.
