Wiring A Trailer Light Connection

I have a 1979 F-350 4x4. It currently has some type of connector for trailer lights and I think brakes but it does not match up with the trailer I am going to rent. I am going to rent a 6'x 12' U-Haul trailer and they have a 4 wire connector on their trailer. It has 3 male prongs and one female receptacle. What is the best way to wire up the 4 wire to my truck so I can easily pick up the trailer and have brake lights and turn signals?

you didn't say how many pins are on your truck, but they make adapters to covert almost any connector...the other option is to install (or have uhaul install) the proper receptacle on your truck.

Depends on what connector you have on your truck, 4 flat--5 flat--6 round--7 rv??????
Basically you are going to have to make a jumper wire from your connector to the 4 flat connector. They make adaptors depending on what your truck has for a connector. Below is an example.

My truck currently has a 6 round (I think that's what it's called). The U-Haul place had an adapter that had the proper connections for a 6 round on one end and came out to the 4 wire on the other end. I kept rotating it (mine has 6 metal connections and theirs has 4) but it never worked.

I guess I also need to make certain that I have power to my connector. Now that I'm home I will do that.

Thanks for any help.

If your truck plug is wired correctly, the adapter above should work. The 6 round will only go in one way. some people use the center post for trailer brakes. it is supposed to be for 12 volt accessory to trailer. the brake wire should go on the s term in the 6 way.

Look to my avatar pic. See those flowerpots behind my truck? I backed into one of them a couple of years ago and cracked the plastic housing for the 6 round wiring. That's why I was able to rotate it to all possible positions for the 6 to 4 adapter at the U-Haul joint. There's no way to determine (for me) which way is the right way to use the adapter. That's why I wanted to know the correct way to hook up a separate 4 wire harness.

Thanks for the replies.

Best Cut out what you have and just start from scratch.

Get uhaul wiring kit part number 14488 for $10 and Tap into your tail light wires and you'll be all set.

The "flat 4" connector is brake, turn and running lights (only). That is all the U-haul needs. Brakes are hydraulic surge type and no electrical connection needed.

Agree good idea to start over using the existing truck taillight harness as a starting point.

Curt part 55301. Plugs into the wiring harness near the left tail light. No cutting or splicing. Best $15 you'll ever spend on trailer stuff.

X2 on adapter to go from 6 pin to 4 pin, and I am pretty sure U-Haul will NOT let you drive off the lot without them working properly.

So take what you need to get it working, they should have the adapters there and the knowledge (be careful here) to get it working. And bring spare round fuses for your old style fuse box.

A 4 pin does not have the ability to power elec brakes.

No lights, no rental. That's how uhaul works.

Usedtabe you could buy 1157 bulbs that had a wire pigtail attached - you replaced your existing brake light bulbs with these, ran the pigtail outside the turn signal lenses, screwed in your lenses, then ran jumpers from the pigtails to the trailer harness. Might save you some time and diagnosis money till you get to a point of wanting to do the job right.

Agreed. I did this recently. Simple, easy 5 minute job.

I went to a different U-Haul place and they had the #14488 4 flat there. Tomorrow they will wire it up to my truck to make certain I don't screw it up.

PBY,

I ordered this on Amazon today. It was $11 cheaper than the Curt site had it for.

I've since went to the local U-Haul joint and they will wire me up a 4 flat tomorrow.

Thanks for your suggestion.
