Hey, I'm brand new here. I recently got a 1989 F150 with the v8 351, 4wd, and some speedometer issues. The speedometer works when driving at residential speeds, like 25-30mph, but once you get up to around 50 the needles dies and sits at 0. I've searched around here for what it could be but didn't really find too much.
At first I thought it was the cable. I took the cluster out, inspected the plastic end and it looked fine. Put the cable back in the cluster, took the other end out of the transfer case, spun it, and it kept spinning. This is making me think that it could be whatever gear is in the transmission. I saw someone say that the Hayne's manual has a great blown view of the parts in the transmission, but the last time I took the truck to a mechanic the guy stole my book and I haven't gotten around to getting another one yet.
If anyone has any diagrams or had a similar experience please let me know. I'm probably going to replace the speedo cable before tearing into the tranny since it's only like $8 from autozone and it would be sweet if I was wrong and that is the only problem.
