high performance ignition coils

brett_d: I've got a '90 F-150 5.8, with the TFI ignition (module mounted on the distributor), and I installed the MSD coil & 6A box with no apparent problem. So far as I can tell, none of the higher voltage leads attach to the TFI module, just the coil and plugs. Regardless, the TFI module went bad shortly after I got the 6A box (probably just coincidence), and I replaced the TFI with a Mallory unit I found at summitracing.com Would have gotten a MSD one, but it doesn't look like they make a replacement TFI module.

All together, I could definitely tell a BIG difference pulling up hills and passing on the highway. Lots more oomph on the downshift!

Have fun!

Ok, good info! I stand corrected!!!

Ohh and too the above poster: MSD does make a TFI module. Atleast the distributer I bought from them had a MSD TFI on it!1988 Ford F250 4x4, 5.0 liter (soon to be Roller 5.0), Mass Air Conversion, Rebuilt AOD tranny, 2.5 Dual exhaust, Headman Shortyheaders, 33" BFG's Mud Terrain, 4.11 gears.

1980 Ford F100, with 1988 5.0L Roller (carburated), T-5 five speed Borg Warner World Class Transmission, 31 spline 9" 3.73 posi , and a bunch more!! 13.78 quarter mile.

Ok another BB gas junkie! No problem with the MSD 6a and coil, just spend the extra $15 bucks and buy the Ford factory plug and it installs in less than 1/2 hour (assuming you have basic mechanical experence!)

I do run one, but I am not real sure it matters a whole lot, I do have many other mods so it is sort of hard to tell, I did not add it until very late in the process, I just happend to get a 6a in a trade so i installed it... After all it was just laying around collecting dust!

Which brings me to I need to pick up the add on timing retard unit for the 6A anyone have one they want to sell (cheap!).. For those who havent read it on other posts... I am supercharging my 460 with a Kenne Bell TS2000-6 and I am going to need to adjust the timing on the fly so I am after the MSD unit... Let me know if anyone wants to get rid of one

Mike

DOH!! Oh well, they didn't have it on their online catalog, so maybe they don't sell it separately. Or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough I'm happy with the Mallory, it hasn't let me down yet!!

Shami02-
what other mods have you done to your truck? I am interested in both uping the performance and also would love for it to get better mielage. I am not at all disapointed with the power, but more is always better right.

Let me beg off for a w3eek or so on what else I have done to my 460... I am in the process of installing a Kenne Bell TS-2000 Supercharger... Shortly after that project is complete I should have a MAF conversion kit in my hot little hands! (Hurry up Dusty!) This little puppy is gonna be a real beast... I am hopeing for around 485 to 500 HP and 600 to 635 or so foot lbs of Torque... I'll advise when I get it done and run it against my Gtech pro computer.... Well I do like to talk about my truck so here is the short list of current mods... I have Hookers, 3" true duals (Cats and all), My heads are done up fairly well with oversized stainless valves and roller rockers, ported etc.... The MSD 6A ignition and TFI coil thru 8.5 mm wires, I like to run split fire plugs... Currently I have a home made ram air setup (hood scoop and all) with a K&N cone type filter... But I would really like to pick up the Cervini fiberglass kit... I did some work for a guy and he paid me with one of those PowerAid spacers for the intake, I am not to sure what good it does but it didn't seem to hurt... The motor is tuned fuel pressure and all... per the Project MPG article (referred to in other places on this board) Mallory adjustable fuel pressure regulator and stainless braided 1/2 fuel line from the tanks up... The trans is an E4OD with a Force 10 converter a special built (performance Automatics) valve body... and an aluminum extra capacity pan... I am running B&M trick shift now but I think I am going to change soon... That fairly well covers the motor trans.. I have done quite a bit to the truck otherwise... dual batteries mounted on the frame, all of the standard add on Lund stuff and a J&J 10 inch drop "V" bumper with lights in it, so on an on.... If you want to send me an email with your mods we can star a dialog and I will lend you the benefit of my experience... Try a guy named Dusty (ddestruel) on this board... he also has done a quite bit with fuel injected big block Fords, you can get a lot out of these animals but it will cost a $ or two....

Have fun,

Mike Shaffer
