high performance ignition coils

could anyone advise on high performance igintion coils for 5.0, '91, such as Accel or MSD or others. Just looking for good hi-output coil, not for racing. Borg Warner offers liftime warranty for about $35., Accell is around $53.(48k volts), 90 day warranty. Not sure what stock voltage is. Appreciate any advise....

I drive a '91 w/ a 302 too. I have an msd blaster coil. Been working great for me. Only time I didn't want it on is when I tore a boot wheelin and a huge spark jumped to the headers whenever the engine was running. Been under water, covered in dirt, always worked perfect, Don't know about a warranty on it though. Just from experience.

I put the Blaster coil on my '93 302 along with the MSD 6A ignition system. I know of no warranty, but I got mine through summit racing (www.summitracing.com) for $35. I love it so far...

what is the 6A ignition system consist of? is the benefits dependent on the mass air or speed density?

I have to ask, with this much voltage, does it shorten plug life or plug wire life? You'd think this kind of voltage, there has to be some downside.... thanks....

Hey Pross, I will try to fill you in on what I know. The 6a is an ignition box that increases the perfomance of the stock system. With
the optional ford harness instalation is a breeze. New high performance plug wires are a must. MSD also makes a high performance ford TFI coil. I just received all these parts yesterday and will install today. As far as the speeddensity goes this modification does not affect it or visa-versa.

billbain explained it very good. The extra voltage does appear to shorten the life of spark plugs, but since I put in new plugs every year, it's not really a problem. I'm not sure that hiperformance wires are neccessary. Before I put on the system, I had just replaced the wires, and then I got the system and the MSD wires. Since I had a warranty on the new wires, I decided to put them on and see if there was a difference. I didn't notice a difference between the MSD wires and my lifetime warranty 8.5MM, so I sent the MSD wires back.

I've had the system for close to 2 years, and to be honest, I think it was the best mod that I've done so far. With it, K&N filter, and exhaust and a few other minor mods, I get an avg. of about 21mpg on the highway. Pretty good, I think, for a Ford truck.

The MSD 6a ignition will no work with a TFI setup will it???? I was the impression you couldnt use it because the Ignition module is on the distributer. Now you can buy a msd distributer with the msd tfi coil and be good to go, I would think.

thanks for the advise... one other issue I noticed was the little condenser mounted to the coil bracket- is it just a noise filter? should it be replaced with a new coil? and does anyone have any radio interference w/these high output coils? thanks again- '91 5.0 Lariat mint

Yeah, that's a noise filter. I've never replaced one yet. I don't notice any more noise with the aftermarket coil and ignition. I have an aftermarket stereo too though.

Brett_d: I've not heard that, but I don't see why you can't run an aftermarket ignition. I know a couple of member's on here who have ignitions.

I have a MSD 6A on my '93 5.0L. MSD makes a plug-in harness to make installation a snap for about $15. Slight improvement in truck performance, maybe.

Pastmaster: I really don't know for sure. Does your rig have the TFI setup? If so how does the MSD 6a hook up? Does the ignition box hook to the TFI on the distributer?? I know how the MSD will hookup on a duraspark ignition but not on a TFI?

I just installed the MSD6A on my 93 TFI. As the post above mentioned they make a harness which makes the installation a snap.
You hook one end to the coil and the other end to the coil
connector. There are terminals comming out of the harness to connect in the 6A wiring, its fool proof!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Nov-01 AT 00:00 AM (EST)]I looked up the connections in my Haynes manual. The inlet hookups are the same for both remote and distributor mounts. I mounted mine on the driver's fendor.

1992+ are remote mounted.
