The quick and dirty way to tell is that looking from the direct side of the starter, at the open portion of the nose cone, while the gear is in all the way, the manual starter gear will be entirely recessed into the body of the starter, whereas the auto starter will be visible. Take a picture or look from this angle:
This photo here made it look like the automatic, but there's a chance that gear was partially extended.
That most recent photo where you were taking the measurements looks like a manual, so I am second-guessing my statement...
So as I purchased the last starter in the county, I had to do some homework to see what’s up: here is my opinion....some facts first: 1) 6 starters, two blew off nose cones and one blew up a pinion, just from starting, not from running out kick back 2) its a high mileage 300, 4 speed, pretty easy to turn over 3) starter secureness to block was good.
Ok, my theory: the “rebuilt” (two from carquest and the rest from NAPA) pinions are SOOOO crappy of metal that the teeth break quickly and then the shorter tooth climbs the ring gear teeth and side loads the shaft, breaking the gear or the nose cone.
The orange paint (I couldn’t find machinist dye) I put on a rebuilt, never installed NAPA starter (can we agree they all come from the same rebuild place?) I sprayed on to see the tooth alignment and contact patch. This was with the .10 NAPA shim in place. Contact is good, not to deep, and far enough on the teeth. This was with two easy starts, less than 2 seconds of cranking total. One of the teeth is severely broken.... That is my theory. I’m ordering a new Remy from Rock Auto to see if it is better.
