Can I ask for a rough hint, what positions walk the 2WD-4WD lever trough, mine does not have any sign on it.
I assume front is 2High, than neutral (is there a neutral position?),
what comes next, 4High?, then 4Low? then 4Low locked?
Is the DiffLock only working in 4Low?
I have the shop manual for my 77 truck, but can't find a clue for that inside
4L, N, 2H, 4H. That's going front to back. I had to remember it because I replaced the **** on my Bronco with an unmarked billet one. I went back to marked ***** in my pickup.
Full time 4wd NP-203 (L/H ****) or part time NP-205 xfer (R/H ****) case? Late made 77 with a "married" case, then probably a NP-205... 4L is fwd towards the dash, 4H back to the seat.
Xfer case ID tag is on the front of the case usually covered in grease/oil/dirt/grim.
Don't have the truck here, but it has free wheeling Hubs in Front, so I assume its a Part time 4WD.
My Marti Report called it fulltime 4WD instead....
It is a 77 built in the end of 76.
VIN F14HNO64420
Ok, but for what reason the PO installed Hubs in front?
Thats make sense if the 4WD is manual shifted, but so the front shaft is driven all the time?
From what I've heard, people will add manual hubs to the front of a full-time 4wd truck to sort of turn it into a 2wd under normal conditions. Since it's the NP203 case, the front driveshaft will be spinning no matter what. If you have the hubs turned to the "2wd" position, you're just disconnecting the wheel from the axle.
So, you can have it in "2wd" where the front wheels will not be driven, but it's still technically full time 4x4
And the NP-203 is a chain driven xfer case and sling lubed with oil. NOT 80/90 gear lube oil either. Like 30 weight motor oil.
And you need to put it in 4wd at least once a month and drive it in a NONE hard packed surface. Dirt, gravel, muddy field while doing donuts ...grass like the x-wife's front yard lol. JK
I believe you can get a "part time" kit and put in the NP-203 that goes along with the manual hubs.
The NP 203 is always in 4WD, so I understand the replies.
So why put it once in a while in 4WD? Or do you recommend to lock the diff? Or Shift to low?
Btw thx for the great input an references!
The 203 is chain driven and lubricated by oil 'flinging' around by the chain drive, its my understanding that placing it in 4hi and 4low every now and again will help lubricate the transfer case........
Yes, 203 full time. According to manual, 203 was only available in auto trans, so yours is probably auto?? 205 part time available in auto or manual. Front hubs are a good idea, if something binds or breaks it can lock the front wheels, not very safe. With lockouts that front diff can absolutely lockup, and wheels still freewheel.
