Transmission help

Sorry this is long but I have a 2004 F150 fx4 with the 5.4. It has roughly 177k on it and I had the transmission replaced at roughly 85k. Well I haven't drove the truck in 2 years cause it needs transmission work done and I bought a 2011 super duty to replace the f150. I used it as collateral on a business loan and now its finally time to get this thing fixed and sold.

My problem is before I parked it it had a leak but it never slipped and drove fine. Trans fault light came on once when we had a big snow fall and I shut the truck off and started it back up and was fine and never acted up. I took it to my mechanic and we both thought it was the pan gasket. He took it apart and said the gasket looked fine but the leak maybe coming from where the shifter linkage goes in but he wont go that far into it cause he don't work on transmissions other than changing a pan gasket. When I parked it there was a puddle that got bigger as the days went by. My wife needed a 4x4 vehicle cause of a big snow storm and went to drive it and it wouldn't move. I got home and added 4qts of fluid and 1 qt of leak stop (I know I shouldn't use it). I got the truck to move. Took it for a ride and rode fine no problems. After 10 miles it started to slip (assuming still low on fluid) and no trans fault light. How much is a typical rebuild? Are they relatively easy to do? My buddy has everything to do it but not sure if I want to help mess with it. Is this a 4r75w or 4r75e? I have been seeing conflicting things and will any 04-08 trans work? Thank you and sorry this is long

Does it need a rebuild? It's not obvious from your post. A rebuild is anywhere from $1500-$3000. You can get that done and it may or may not fix what's wrong.

A better way to approach this is to take it to someone that knows what they are doing (hint: the guy you already took it to is NOT one of those.) Once the codes are read the problem can be diagnosed. It might need a rebuild, or it may be something relatively simple. Without some diagnosis NOBODY knows what's wrong.
