The transmission started leaking on my 2009 F150 5.4 Crewcab, it looks like.
Did some minor offroading last Thursday, some snow 4x4 with about 5 minutes of 4 low because of snow/ice with steep inclines & declines.
Drove the truck to do some errands and shopping on Friday with my wife. It was pretty muddy and it hasn't been above freezing since then so the truck has been parked outside... so as to not melt mud all over my garage.
I noticed Monday that there was a puddle underneath the truck. So I crawled underneath on the concrete (when it was 18F btw!) to see what it was. Reddish fluid looks like it is coming from the transmission.
I Parked outside at work on Tuesday and a small puddle formed again under it by the end of the day.
I parked it in the garage overnight to melt some ice off before I took it in and put some cardboard underneath. Surprisingly there was no oil on the cardboard this morning.
It seems like the cold is maybe contracting the seals and letting oil through... thats my "home mechanic" diagnosis.
The truck's at the dealer today hopefully getting diagnosed and fixed. Although I'm doubtful they will be able to fix any transmission leak in one day if that is the case.
Had tranny leak on my 09. They replaced pan gasket, still leaked, transfer case output shaft seal, still leaked. They finally said it was a plug on top of tranny housing seeping & it was on backorder till late Jan.? Mine was a slight leak. More so after it had been sitting for a while. Can't say for sure if that was it cause I traded the truck before part came in.
They said it was a small leak as well. I don't think they said it was coming from the pan gasket.
I crawled underneath before I took it in and it looked like it was actually coming from where a sensor plugged into the tranny on the side near the bottom. I'm not sure if that is what they are replacing or not.
They said the part is on backorder though and they are trying to find another dealer with one.
My problem sounds similar to yours though, as it leaks significantly more if left sitting for awhile.
My 09 did the same thing. There was a small puddle it one morning. When I took it in they said there were 3 more trucks before me with the same problem. It took them a week to get the back ordered part, and about half a day to replace it.
No leaks since then.
I was concerned about driving the truck while it was leaking, but the guy told me that the trans hold 16 quarts of fluid.
The tranny was doing the harsh 1-2 and 2-1 shift. I think there is a TSB for it somewhere? They said they would look into it.
The service advisor called and said they performed a "computer update" (I assume the TSB) and it made it worse. He said they will have to pull the tranny and do something to it. I'm guessing it is in Ford's hands now as to what procedures they perform.

Can you offer up what part they replaced from their service work order?
Well, I picked it up today and chatted with the service advisor. Apparently it seems fine now... I think when he spoke before regarding making it worse he had just spoken with the tech and the transmission had not relearned yet. Apparently after the reflash/TSB there is a semi-lengthy relearn process.
I drove the truck home and it seemed to shift considerably better. No more clunks in the 1-2 or 2-1 shifts. Beforehand if you were driving slow in city traffic you could clearly hear and feel a clunk on those shifts.
It has to go back in next Tuesday for unrelated stuff that was backordered, they said they would test the tranny out again just in case.

I don't have my paperwork yet since they aren't done, but I will add it once I get everything finished if he hasn't.
They replaced a pressure switch or sensor of some kind. I'm sure the guy told me but I don't remember. I do remember him saying that the old one just couldn't hold back the pressure.
