hey guys, my rad is shot and i have a few questions.
79 f250 with a 390fe
Im trying to avoid spending 600.00 on a new supercooling rad that came stock with my engine.
Can i run the smaller lighter duty rad in my truck?, Im not doing any towing its just my daily. (that rad is 200.00)
Or does anyone know of a cheaper rad from a different year or model that matches up?
4 different radiators were available for 1973/79 F100/350's.
The standard, xtra cooling and A/C radiators measure approx: 26 1/4" wide x 19 1/4" high. The only real difference is the thickness of the cores.
Super Cooling radiator has a HUGE top tank, it's wider and deeper than the other radiators. Measures approx: 26 1/4" wide x 24 1/4" high.
1973/78's with round headlights have two different radiator supports. One was only used with the Super Cooling radiator, as it has a larger opening radius.
It sounds like you have an older engine (390) in a later truck... pretty common. can you post a pic of your current radiator? It may help with responses.
In general, a cost effective 3 core Champion would probably provide the cooling you need if it bolts up. If it does not fit or if there are gaps around the radiator that let air bypass, it may not work so well. That is why the pic would help... to see what you are starting with.
When the supercooling radiator in my 77/460/C6 could no longer be repaired, I bought the cheap one from AutoZone. I think it's two row.
I expected the worst, but it's towed the boat to the lake in the summertime with no problems. Drove all day through Mexicali traffic at 100 degrees and never got over 210
I was concerned, but the cheap two-row has been fine.
I can say this for sure, my stock rad for the 400 I used to run would not cool my 460. Everybody said it would but it didn't. Went with this 4 row Super cooler and it has never got hot since. It is big and heavy and a 2 person job to put it in without damaging it. Back in 2007 I got one from Performance radiator for $360. Guy at the rad shop said it was a import. They were somewhat light on the solder holding the tanks together, hasn't leaked since resoldering the tanks though.
the factory 3 row crapped out on my truck a while back. Replaced it with a $275 Autozone 2 row aluminum unit and it cools much better, even in 100 degree heat with the AC running.
I put a "plastic top" cheapo in my dent a couple years ago and it's worked like a champ ($200 I think). Truck stays between 180-190 at all times (A/C, texas summer, etc.)
I have the 4 row supper cooling radiator, was able to cool a 545 stroker, a 460 built up, and a 400 either driving around, towing, offroading, or whatever. I know I willspend the extra for a super cooler if need be again. My local guy can recore those for less than new .
I just did the champion 3 row about 6 months ago. Got it off ebay which saved me about $50 compared to the champion website. Its aluminum, lifetime warranty (used it once already for a defect from the factory), and about the same money as the autozone ones that don't have a lifetime warranty. I highly recommend it.
