like to change engine

i have a 65 f-250 flatbed that the p.o. put a 300 straight six out of a 91 in to it. then couldn't get it to run so he left it up in camdon pass area said if i wanted it to go get it. so i did. got it home had to put a new used tranny into it and fab up some throttle linkage but there is no spot for a fuel pump. the only fuel pumps i can find are all gravity feed and the outlet on the tank is on top and the truck overheats because half of the radiator is jb weld and a few rusty body parts but it was free, yeah. so should i change to engine to a straight six that is closer to the year of the truck like a 69 or 70. how expensive are the 300 to rebuild.?

Any small diaphram style electric pump will work fine. Mount it on the frame by the engine and it will draw from the tank just fine.

I've seen similar models at Napa or Autozone.

Electric pumps push better than pull .
so mount it as close to tank as possible.

Electric fuel pump is a "pusher" .. should be mounted as close to the fuel tank as possible.

Engine mounted fuel pump is a "puller."

The pump I posted is a diaphram style electric pump, not a rotary pump. So it draws the same as a mechanical pump on the engine. Yes, a Holley, Carter, and the like are positive displacement gear pumps and need to be lower then the supply of gas. They have very little suction. Basically like an oil pump. They need to be submerged to work.

This is the basics:

Looking at their chart you can see the "avg wet lift" each pump offers: (basically how far it can draw vertically)

On my race car, yes I have a Mallory 140 gph gear pump mounted in the rear, under the tank.
