I own a 1972 Bronco with a 302 and 4-barrel Edelbrock Carb. The mechanical fuel pump went out a few years ago, so I replaced it. Now the pump has gone out again, so I decided to go electric. I bought a Holley red electric pump, but it had to be mounted in such a fashion that the inlet/outlet tube was below the bottom of the tank (I guess it was a "push" style pump). Anyone who has been under one of these trucks knows that there is no way to mount a push style pump close enough to the tank while keeping it below the bottom of the tank; the frame rail is just too high to be able to make it work. So I then proceeded to buy a universal pump that was supposed to be a pull type so that I could mount it anywhere I wanted (supposedly). I have mounted it twice and still cannot get any fuel to my carb. I have mounted it once in the front of the frame rail inside the engine compartment and could not get any results. Then I mounted it right by the pump and still nothing. I am pretty sure that the pump should prime itself, but maybe I just have a poor piece of equipment. Can anyone tell me a solution that will work? Maybe you guys can recommend a good in-line pump that has enough suction to pull fuel out of the tank no matter how high up it is mounted while also being able to push 6-7 psi into the carb.
u could go back to the holley and make a bracket that fits to the outside of the framerail and will drop the pump down lower than the bottom of the tank. u would have to find aplace that is kinda protected if u plan to do any major offroading but i would think that would be the best way to go
Electric pumps have to be really close to the tank for good results, and on a duel tank app its usually duel electrics. Anyhew on my old 73 bronco I loaded it with electrics and used some aluminum line to custom plumb a route from the rear main tank to the electric pump which I mounted on the outside of the frame rail just infront of the rear tire, I set up a custom guard for the pump and lines and that worked pretty dern well. I would have rather put it on the inside of the frame but space was limited. Originally I mounted it on the bottom of the body inside the frame rails back by the rear tank but it was too close to the exhaust for my liking. In both mountings the pump was above the tank, but close enough to prime quickly and below the tanks full level. And the furthur away the electric is from the fuel tank the shorter the lifespan, electric pumps do not like to pull fuel.
