I am wanting to install an Airtex low pressure electric fuel pump to use whenever my 223 six sometimes get the vapor lock hiccups. Since my tank is mounted under the running board, there is not much space ahead of the tank to install the pump. For those out there using an electric pump with the fuel tank under the running board, where did you install yours? Thanks. Steve
My F1 is a panel and the gas tank is located in the usual place on the driver's side under the frame, but for many years my truck operated successfully with an electric pump attached to the inner fender. My truck is a 215cid I6.
Typically you want to mount the pump as low and close to the tank as you can. Most electric fuel pumps are designed to "push" the fuel rather than "pulling" it.
My fuel line actually goes rearward to the next crossmember where I mounted a Carter electric pump to push the fuel the rest of the way forward. It is lower than the tank and close enough.
You generally want to push the fuel...many of the electric pumps don't suck well.
I had very tight space on the driver's side with the new master cylinder/booster, power steering conversion and headers, so I ran my fuel line around to the passenger side. I mounted it on the frame behind the battery box. I also installed an impact switch from the trunk of a Crown Vic, so if it's ever in an accident the fuel pump will be shut down. Let's hope I never need it.
