The drivers side chrome cowl strip disappeared from my 66F100 custom cab. The clips are still there. Does anyone have a suggestion for the easiest way to attach the new chrome (bought from Carolina Classics)?. Thanks, j66b
IIRC, once you remove the vent door off the kick panel on the inside of the A pillar, with some contorting you should be able to reach up in there to get the nuts off the clips using a 1/4" drive ratchet.
And if I don't recall correctly, someone will set me straight shortly
I have, in the distant past, attached that trim piece with nuts, using the contortions James describes. However, my recent attempt resulted in failure. I couldn't reach the forward stud with the nut. I then learned of the "butterfly" clip that allows the forward edge of the trim to be attached from the outside. I got the rear end of the trim on with a nut. I guess you could use four butterfly clips and simply push the two cowl trim pieces on. All '65-'66 trucks do not have the butterfly clips; don't know why.

So, on either side of the cowl, there are only TWO clips holding the CC trim piece on. The forward one (closest to the hood) is what Eric described as a "butterfly" clip. (ie: it fits inside the channel on backside of the trim, and "pops" into a hole, so essentially it's a hybrid of a T clip & a barrel clip)
The second hole further back has the T clip, which uses a nut on the backside.
Personally, although it might seem easier, I wouldn't use two of the Butterfly clips, as they don't pull the trim up nearly as tight as the T clips, which means you risk losing the trim (AGAIN!)
I did take a pic of the two clips still in place on the cowl, but sorry, I don't do photobucket.......
I took my cover off and inspected the clips. They are both butterfly, made of spring steel, and are connected to the body via a nylon bullet insert. I took a cheap screwdriver, and bent it into a mini pry bar, which fits into the notch in the clip and allows you to flex the clip away from the body and slide the clip into the notch on the chrome strip. Do the bottom first, then the top. I put a piece of foam tape on the pry bar so as not to scratch the body. There is no advantage to removing the clips from the body: you have to bend them to install the trim piece anyway, and they have enough spring in them to avoid distortion.
The ends of the strip are different. One is bevelled so that the door can open.
Thanks to all who replied, and Carolina Classics for producing the piece.
