I know some of you have used the CPP disc brake kit on your truck, I just can't remember who it was. I also saw some converted trucks and talked to the owners and they were happy. So, I bought the 4856 dbk 5.5 kit from CPP. That kit includes the brackets-a bearing spacer and the hardware. I already had 2 sets of rotors off of my parts trucks, one a 92 F150 and the other a 85 F150. I had both sets of rotors turned and got the rest of the parts from a local parts store. I bought 2 calipers and a set of pads for a 1985 Chevy C10 pickup, 2 sets of A2 bearings, and 2 sets of A13 bearings, which was what CPP said was needed. I removed the old drum brakes and everything seemed ok until I tried to put on the calipers. I cant get the calipers on with the pads installed. It appears the rotors are too thick for the calipers with the pads installed to fit over them!! I checked it with all 4 of the rotors. I have called the CPP Tech line but they were all busy and was told I would be called back but so far no call back. I looked on youtube and saw a guy install everything easy as pie. Can any of you help? Thanks Greg.
Well, I got a call back from CPP. It seems there are 2 different calipers for 80's Chevy pickups. Standard or HD brakes. I got the standard ones and I need the HD's. That explains it. Wish that little bit of info was in the instruction sheet! Back to the parts store!!
that little tid bit of info will never leave you. Not happy for your problems but now when I replace pads I will know as I have the same as you only they were on when I bought the truck. Thanks.
I thought I used calipers for a Chevy Caprice when I converted mine. Went on pretty easy. Make sure you can get to the grease fittings on your king pins. My kit had me plugging the old location and drilling & taping a new position.
...but, years ago when I used the CPP kit I used 1990 and earlier F-150 front discs with matching inner bearings and seals. The kit called for mid sized GM (Chevelle, Cutlass, Monte Carlo, etc) outer bearings and big GM calipers (I used the calipers from my donor car - 72 Caddy).
I didn't have any issues, I didn't even have to move my king pin grease zerks. I installed the caliper brackets then I cleaned up the spindles, heated the bearing adapters in the oven and slipped them on the spindles. Then packed the bearing, installed the seals and put the rotors in place. The calipers went right on with no issues.
