I have a 2004 Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4L DOHC Intec engine. It has 150k miles and it has recently developed a rough idle. I plugged my scan tool in and noticed very erratic ignition advance timing - see attachment. Any ideas why this would be the case? Think the timing chain and/or timing chain tensioners/guides are shot?
Does this engine have camshaft sensors? As far as I know it doesn't have the phasers, so might not have camshaft sensors either?
Not sure how slack in the chain would cause erratic ignition timings, unless it has camshaft sensors and is reading an erratic valve timing.
Another thing to check might be knock sensor, might even try to unplug it and see if the erratic behaviour stops. The knock sensor has a direct effect on the ignition timing.
