2004 Expeition possible ECU problem

My Expedition runs very erratically. Low to no power for acceleration. Occasional backfire when driven and erratic shifting. The MIL is not on and there are no OBD codes. The ECU # is 4L1A-12A650-NA. I can't find a local ECU repair facilityfor testing/repair. I'm considering obtaining a used ECU to try. What are the ramifications of doing this? Such as ignition key no longer working and non matching VIN? Also, does a replacement need to have the NA suffix? I've been directed to one with an RA sufix, but I don't know if that's critical. Any input would be appreciated.

Replacing the ECM is a last resort since it tends to almost never be the source of a problem. What other tests have you done, such as a fuel pressure test?
