I found an older post from several years ago, but nothing specific. I have a 1979 f150 4x4 Lariat SWB "Trailer Special" badge on tailgate. My engine is a 400 6.6 liter with C6 transmission. Can someone tell me what makes this a trailer special? I can't find any info on this truck. Also on my title the model is listed as COF15. The license and registration office could not tell me what that meant either. Here's my truck, and this is like the badge on my tailgate.
Well, I'm green, so what's an axillary battery? I have an oversized radiator. Where would transmission cooler be located? There's no trailer wiring harness that I know of. The gauges are what came on it from factory, in the dash. The alternator came off a 77 that previous owner had when he sold me the truck. Thanks.
From a post I remember from Number Dummy, the only way to tell for sure you have a trailer special is the trailer plug wiring harness. All the other options were available separately as well.
don't forget lighting relay, and brake controller, as well as rear bumper for trailering.
I was thinking there should have been a brake controller but, it's not there either. I've got a chrome rear step bumper. There is 2 shadow marks on bottom of bumper where something was attached, maybe a trailer hitch.

The trailer harness is on top of the left side of the frame underneath of the bed behind the cab
This is a picture of it I have the bed moved back because I'm repairing it. but the cab has not been moved so that's the distance it is from the cab on top of the left frame rail

As I recall, the tail lamp harness has an extra feed wire for the wiring harness used for Camper & Trailer Specials.
At final assembly, this wiring harness was placed inside a plastic bag, then put into the glove box.
I asked for it so I've got to take it, but the more I read about trailer specials it makes me think I don't even have one. I never heard of one till I seen this truck. There was 2 holes in center of tailgate. The owner told me he didn't know why they were there. I look in glove box and there's 2 emblems in there that say trailer special. He has no clue about where thgey go. There a an outline on tailgate so I stick the trailer special emblem in the holes and it matched. Other than an oversized radiator I see nothing that says trailer special.

F150 Trailer Special introduced in 1977.
1977/79 F150/350's only had one Trailer Special emblem (as pictured), t'was located on the rear center lower of the tailgate.
Only 1.8% of the 337,068 1977 F150's assembled came with trailer towing equipment, so today, one of these trucks would be quite rare.
To verify if your F150 is a Trailer Special: You'll have to order a copy of the original build sheet (known as a Marti Report), from martiauto.com
