I have a 2002 F350 7.3 Diesel. dual batteries
I had some low battery voltage issues in the past yr and batteries would not maintain a charge, determined the Alternator was bad. I replaced the alternator 11/2016. Vehicle ran and performed without problems since. Still starts and runs well. Recently I noticed the battery light is on constantly.
owners manual isn't much help. Batteries are both fairly new 12-14months old.
anyone else had this problem and diagnosed. Is there any damage to the vehicle in running it?
If you got a re built alternator for the parts store it is very likely that its bad again as indicated by the battery light which is really an alternator light in the first place. First thing is to ensure that all electrial connections are clean and tight if you find a loose or dirty corroded connection you can clean tighten charge the batteries and then drive to see if you get the light again. If nothing is found then you need to load test the batteries separately so you will have to unhook them and have the alternator tested as well the battery light being on means that its not producing the voltage like it should be like I said the battery light is actually an alternator light. Driving the truck with the light on isn't doing your batteries or the rest of the electrical components in your truck any favors. Just because your batteries are newer or even brand new does make the good. At this point you need to test everything and if you need to replace the batteries it should be done in pairs
Also check to ensure your belt(s) are properly adjusted. If the belt is slipping the alternator won't charge correctly. Slipping belts don't always make noise. If loose they can cause charging problems.
Troubleshooting 101...Do you have a volt ohm meter? With the engine running you should see 14+ Volts DC. If not look at all the alternator and battery cable connections to the block and to the starter. Even those smaller 10Ga wires attached to the inner fenders.
If your still having problems Isolate both batteries and individually load test them. A new battery doesn't mean a good battery.
