No oil pressure

I recently had a problem causing my crank case to fill up with gas tell it was spitting out of the oil fill. I fixed the problem but now I have no oil pressure. The gauge will barely come over to the L mark. Any ideas?

I assume you've changed the oil?

Was it run long like that? If it was, I'm putting my vote in for bearings.

Have you tried a different oil pressure gauge? Is it mechanical or electric?

Gasoline and bearings don't mix well, and your lack of oil pressure is backing this up.

If you plan on keeping that engine in any kind of decent shape, a teardown is in order right away to determine the problem. It might cost a few $$$ now, but it'll cost a lot more later when you're picking your crank up off the road.

I would go and get some 50w racing oil and change the oil. If your bearings are thin, the thicker oil should hold a thicker film and thus create some pressure. It will buy you some time but at the very least, your cam bearings are probably worn very thin. Listen for any noises at about 1/2 throttle holding. If you hear any rattling then the bearings are worn.

The oil pressure goes up after a cold start because the oil hasn't reached temperature, so it's a lot thicker. This is a small possibility that the gas blew your oil pump to heck, but more than likely it's a bearing problem.

Get a mechanical gauge, not one that reads "L----H". Come up with some Real Numbers. You may have loosened up a lot of sludge that is blocking the pickup in the bottom of the pan. May have ruint the bearings. You wont *KNOW* unless you know the real pressures. Does it tap?(lifters) Does it Rap? Does it Thud? Does it Knock? These sounds all mean different things, and you haven't mentioned one of them. Sorry to be mean, but you have left out a lot of relevant information....

Drain the oil and remove the filter. Before you put the drain plug back in the pan use a welding rod or stiff wire and "sweep the inside of the oil pan under the oil pickup. Could be that the gas washed a bunch of crap loose and it is clogging the pickup. You may be surprised at what you can sweep out of there. Use kerosene to flush out the pan, then change the oil and filter to whatever you like. If you are lucky the oil pressure will return to what you had before. If not listen for engine rattle on startup, this indicates you need a set of bearings. Post back, we like to see how these turn out.
