I just finished a cam swap in my 71 460. Installed Lunati 61601 for low end grunt. I was priming the oil system with a drill motor and stripped down distributor, seeing oil at the rockers, all good. Wanted to see if I had oil pressure showing on the guage. Turned on key, then ran the drill motor again. When I spun the oil pump the electric fuel pump kicked in too! It filled the carb up until the floats shut off the needle and seat. Why would fuel pump run? I know fuel will shut off if low oil pressure is sensed, will it also run if good oil pressure is found? It was no problem, actually it save me from having to fill the carb manualy prior to cam break in. Just surprised to have it happen. Thoughts?
I thought on these systems the fuel pump did not run until the starter relay is engaged. Why would spinning oil pump start fuel flow? the key alone did not start the fuel pump.
These pumps run when the ignition is in start (with no oil pressure) and also in run when the oil pressure (OP) switch senses pressure.
That makes sense, just never seen it in action before. Made it easy to fill the carb for quick first start up on cam swap. Last time I filled the carb with a hypodermic through the float fuel level holes on my Holley. Thanks.
