1985 Ford E-350, Box Truck. 6.9 Diesel. Facet Duralift 40222 connected to front tank only.
This little problem is still giving me nightmares (and costing my business money).
The truck has been stumbling up hill, and has also stalled at idle. I replaced the fuel pump, and fuel lines, but it still seems to run dry on the up hill. It also died at idle in downtown Seattle, and refused to restart until I put on a new fuel pump (that was fun).
I noticed that the fuel bowl in the pump will slowly work down, and then refill all at once. It looks like there are some bubbles along the top of the fuel in the bowl.
I have the pump mounted right by the tank.
I pulled the sending unit last night, on both tanks, hoping to swap them. Different units, one is slightly bent to account for a shallower tank in front. I changed out the rubber hose on the front tank sending unit, and slapped a screw type hose clamp on. There was no visible damage or clogs on the sending unit, and it seems to have this problem whether it is full or empty.
Can't get the damn lock ring back on the rear tank.
Don't think the problem is fixed.
I'm about to take it to the mechanic, which I hate to do... but I can't keep losing business on account of my inability to solve this problem.
This is my last ditch post. What could possibly be the matter here? Is it an injection pump? What else can I try?

You are getting air into it. Plain and simple. Check every hose connection /before/ your fuel pump. Maby bypass everything and run a straight piece of fuel line right to the tank pickup connection at the tank.
