anyone ever replace the evt's and timiming chain and phaser sprockets on a 2010 4.6 3v triton? Looking to do mine do to issues with bad phasers and very high mileage 186000. Looking for issues to watch out for or special tools needed
What's your issues? 2010 has the better phasers already installed. I would go with OEM parts. No special tools needed just got to know what you are doing. Search for "timming a 5.4" and read my posts there.
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I have been bad on oil changes on this truck so it's my own fault. Issues are that when the engine is hot from running the highway then coming to a stop or backing into my driveway I get a severe diesel noise and chatter until I put it in neutral or park and bring the rpm up and it goes away and is fine until highway speed and it will do it again. Worse it hotter weather. Also when I unplug the evt's the problem never happens at any speed or rpm. So I'm assuming it either plugged evt or phasers or weak oil pump or everything
You may have more damage than phasers. Before you tear into the engine you should measure the crankshaft endplay and oil pressure. Ford had a problem with the thrust bearing in 07 where it would wear out and let the crank walk back and forth. Since your truck hasn't had the proper oil changes it would be wise to rule out any thrust bearing issue. Next test the oil pressure with a real gauge you should have at least 20 psi at hot idle. If the pressure is good then you can try the updated VCT solenoids in my signature. Or if you plan on keeping the truck a full timing set and oil pump would be a good investment. Just make sure you pull a few cam caps first to check for any excessive scoring on the cam journals.
Thanks we are on the same page. Yes I plan on keeping the truck and I will be replacing the phasers, evt's, chain , guides , sprockets, and pump reguardless of the pressure. At 186000 I am sure it could all use freshing up. I'll check the caps also while I'm in there. One question I've had is do I need to nuturlize the cam by pulling the rockers or will it stay put. Some say some say it stays put . Or does it really matter if the phaser is keyed to were it only can go on in one position? What everyone's thoughts?
