I am trying to decide between 2 different cams. The high energy 268 comp cam and 270 magnum for my 400 ci. I am doing a complete rebuild on it. I have ported stock heads, 750cfm quick fuel carb, Tims pistons around 9.5:1 CR, a wieand intake mani, headers, and i believe that is it. Thr truck is auto but i have plans to make it manual in the near future. Im looking for power but i also want the lumpy idle. Is the 270 magnum a good fit? I currently have yhe 268HE but i think ill be happier with the 270. The truck is going to be a toy so not a daily.
I have the 268H from comp in my 460ci. I am happy with it but I would not call it lumpy. Comp explains it as a "noticeable idle." At the time of purchase, I had a C6 with the stock torque converter and was told this was the largest duration cam I should use. I have the truck in the shop right now fabricating pedals and swapping in a ZF5. Now I want a bigger cam. haha. Go with the bigger.
Was the 268 he choppy or did it sound stock. I know sound isnt important but if i can go up alittle and maybe loose a tad power for the lumoy choppy idle id rather have that

LOL, that's not how you're supposed to spec a cam. Seriously, you just want to be sure that the cam won't cost you any torque.
Then you'll want good intake manifold and headers, to take better advantage of such a cam.
Id say the 268HE has a "noticeable idle" And as it was previously mentioned..."between choppy and stock" is another good way to describe it.
X2 on using a better intake manifold and headers...highly recommend. And if budget allows, maybe a nice set of roller tip rockers and a screw in stud kit.
I already have a cam that was picked by the guy i bought aome.engine parts from this is just a tad bigger and it has the idle quality i like. If anything i think it will increase power. I have roller rockers with screw in studs, an intake mani, and headers
Remember to choose a cam that makes power where you'll use it. You can go with a Thumpr cam for awesome sound but they're designed to make power from 2k rpm on up. Here's a guy with a 351 and a Big ***** Thumpr. They have a lower LSA which gives them that sound and feel. Sounds BA to me.
