vibration on low-gear downshift...

vibration on low-gear downshift...
my wife's '89 Aerostar has only 11.000 miles on new engine but 184,000 on original tranny (with new frt.and rear seals)...here's the problem...
When coming to a stop, and the auto tranny downshifts to low gear, there is a vicious vibration of unknown origin. When I shift to neutral, the vibe goes away. It only happens so far when the tranny downshifts to the lowest gear. The transmission shifts fine and engages in all gears efficiently.
Any ideas what I should check to find this problem???
